Second Annual NYU Purple List Announced

Second Annual NYU Purple List Announced

Last year, in order to spotlight the talents emerging from NYU’s graduate film program, students Ash Bhalla and Shandor Garrison created the Purple List, the university’s answer to the Blacklist. The notable success of the 2012 Purple List was Shaka King’s stoner comedy Newlyweeds, which premiered this January at Sundance and was picked up for distribution by Phase 4 Films.

Romantic short films that express the beauty and anguish of love, with animation, drama and dark sexy comedy.

Love is hard to find, whether you’re a lonely little fish or the Chancellor of world power. Love is hard to keep, battered as it may be by hurricanes and politics. But worst of all, lost love may haunt and torture you, with bad dreams and cheap trinkets, till you want to forget and move on but hold out hope for some final passionate reconnection. The short films in this program run the gamut from romantic to heartbreaking, from disturbing to hilarious, but they all hit hard right in the heart. – Mark Elijah Rosenberg

THE FILMS

SONNTAG 3 (Jochen Kuhn | Germany | 14 min.)
The stress of leading the largest economy in the European Union can make for some strange blind dates.

THE WEDDING (Simon Cottee | 5 min.)
When love blossoms, it isn’t always comforting, as a melancholy boy sheds his memories of his estranged father’s wedding on a cramped boat in shark-infested waters.

WHEN WE LIVED IN MIAMI (Amy Seimetz | USA | 13 min.)
A hypnotic short about a woman struggling to keep her family from falling apart, filmed during the fallout of a real hurricane.

CONTENTS OF C_____’S BOX, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER (Ian Berry | USA | 3 min.)
The mementos of a lost love spark cherished memories and episodes best forgotten.

SOUNDS GOOD (Kerri Lendon | USA | 4 min.)
When you’re having that talk that no one wants to have, even the most banal clichés and sounds can get a little distorted.

PLUG AND PLAY (Michael Frei | USA | 5 min.)
A playful animation in a black and white world of male and female plugs and cords, where the intermingling of light and dark equal the balance of power and love.

ON SUFFOCATION (Jennifer Malmqvist | 7 min.)
Love is dangerous and powerful, sometimes to the beholder, in this tragic political commentary, stunningly told without words.

TIRED OF SWIMMING (Anna Eijsbouts | 6 min.)
An old man is torn between the memory of his wife, a fish in a jar, and the reality of his lonely existence.

RPG OKC (Emily Carmichael | 9 min.)
Even video games fall in love.

HEAD OVER HEELS (Timothy Reckhart | 11 min.)
After years of marriage, Walter and Madge have grown apart: he lives on the floor and she on the ceiling. A little glimmer of hope that love can prevail through the ups and downs of life.

Watch Emily Carmichael’s excellent short films.

There aren’t a lot of people whose first feature gets produced by Spielberg, but as is usually the case, Carmichael’s seeming overnight success is the product of years of preparation.
